STN Display (Super-Twisted Nematic)

STN stands for 'Super-Twisted Nematic' and is a form of passive matrix liquid crystal display, using less power and being less expensive to manufacture than TFT LCDs.

Each pixel must be refreshed individually many times per second and STN displays generally have a slower response time than TFT displays. This produces a lower image quality and can give rise to image 'ghosting' and a lack of contrast and brightness when compared to a TFT equivalent.

There are two colour variants of STN display technology. Green STN has a green background with dark violet or black characters as seen in the Sagem myC-1 to the right. Silver STN has dark blue or black characters on a silver/grey background.
