* Unlicensed Mobile Access
(UMA, known as The Generic Access Network (GAN) after it
was adopted by the 3GPP in April 2005) allows access to
GSM / GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies,
including Bluetooth and WLAN 802.11. This can provide excellent
coverage and sound quality even in areas where mobile phone
reception has previously been poor. The phone automatically
selects the optimal network. As the phone must have two
radios on board which must scan for networks at all times,
standby battery life in UMA mode is limited compared to
GSM.
