SMS (Short Message Service)

Short Message Service (SMS) affords the user the ability to send and receive short (160 characters) text messages to and from GSM mobile phones almost anywhere in the world without the use of an operator. Most modern mobile phones accommodate this service.

It also enables a computer user to send the same text messages directly to a mobile phone. Similar but smarter than paging SMS is a store and forward procedure so if the intended recipient of the message is unavailable the message will appear when they or their phone comes back online. The sender may also specify that a received message be sent upon receipt of their message.

It is also possible to receive such things as weather reports, email, sports news and so on via the SMS service.

Nokia developed 'Smart' SMS can be used for sending and receiving ringtones, picture messages, logos and so on.

Sony Ericsson also use EMS. EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) affords the user the possibility to create, send and receive SMS which can consist of any combination of text, pictures and melodies. Also see MMS.
