CSTN
Display (Colour Super-Twisted Nematic)
Standing for 'Colour Super-Twisted Nematic',
CSTN is a form of passive-matrix liquid crystal display
developed by the Sharp Electronics Corporation in the early
90's.
CSTN is based on STN technology but uses white light and
coloured filters to produce a colour image. What appears
to be a single pixel in a CSTN display is in fact three
individual graphic chip controlled pixels which use coloured
filters (red, green and blue).
Early CSTN screens suffered from slow response times which
caused problems such as image 'ghosting'. Newer CSTN displays
offer better response time, wider viewing angles, and improved
colour.
Based on passive-matrix technology CSTN displays are significantly
cheaper to manufacture than the TFT equivalent.
